Posted 8 Apr 2008

A Seat By The Window Company is a vibrant young theatre company based in Colchester, Essex.

We are now restaging a version of the first show, Check Mate. The show will rehearse in Colchester for the first two weeks of August, then play in Colchester for a week before touring to London for one week also.

We are looking for young people under-25 to fill several new positions with the company for this summer project. Applicants must be between 15 and 25-years-of-age and live in and around the Colchester or London areas. These positions are unpaid but offer a high quality showcase of work and we hope working with the company will prove an inspiring and fun experience:

technician–sound and lights: to do light and sound for the show in London, having seen it a few times in Colchester. Needed for a week and a half at the end of August. We are looking for someone with good technical knowledge and experience of working in theatres operating light and sound desks.

stage manager/prop master: to be on the book throughout rehearsals, find and locate props, liase between actors and the director about rehearsal schedule and accomodation, stage manage the production in both venues. Needed for the full four weeks. Must have experience.

publicist: to work alongside the director and publicity sponsors to liase with press and publicity and market the show and company. Flexible hours and time. Publicity experience preferred, but good experience in other areas also considered.

At the end of the piece there is a chess game where characters lift and throw each other in three short set pieces. A dancer confident with how to lift and throw bodies would be ideal but a trainee fight director with lots of experience would also be welcomed.

Arcola Theatre offers a diverse range of unpaid internship and volunteering opportunities.

Whether you have specific skills you want to develop, want to find out about the many different careers available in theatre, or just want to meet people and work in an interesting environment; come join the Arcola team.

We are specifically looking for people interested in:

* theatre management who can work 3 days a week or more
* theatre marketing who can work 2 days a week or more
* theatre technical services who can work 2 evenings per month or more
* front of house (ushering/cafe/bar) who can work 2 evenings per month or more

We actively

Clever thinking

Other ways of getting work experience as well as taking part in an work placement include:

  • Joining a youth theatre
  • Volunteering. Check out vinspired
  • Work shadowing (Following a theatre professional around for a day or two, obviously with their permission. Otherwise, it’s simply stalking)
  • Taking a casual job in a local theatre eg stage hand, usher, bar work
  • Working somewhere other than a theatre where you can learn similar skills eg a cinema, a music venue, at an outdoor event, a conference or exhibition etc
  • Doing an Arts Award

“I met loads of new people and came away with confidence and a new in-depth knowledge of the theatre and its workings”

Rachelle Martyn, 16, Bristol, talking about work experience

“It opened my eyes to the range of jobs to be done even before the curtains go up, let alone when the production is in full swing”

Beckz Smith, 20, Swindon, talking about work experience

How to make the most out of work experience

  • Have a clear idea of what you would like to get out of it before you begin and discuss this with your placement supervisor.
  • Talk to as many people as you can within your host organisation. Just pick the right time ie not when they’re up a ladder or have come off a long phone call.
  • Always be punctual. It will be noticed if you are not.
  • Be enthusiastic about whatever tasks you are given. (Within reason – obviously if they have you emptying the bins every day this is out of order.) If you can prove yourself quickly, chances are you will be offered more challenging things to do.
  • Offer to make the tea. Really. It sounds like a cliché, but people will love you for it. And get a pad to note down how everyone likes their cuppa. It will earn you serious brownie points.
  • Ask questions, even if you think they’re really obvious. People will just be glad that you are interested. And when better to find out the answers than from people already doing the job.
  • Enjoy it! Yes, you want to be taken seriously, and messing around is out of order, but you are allowed to crack a smile occasionally. No one wants to work around a total mardy arse.
  • Dress appropriately. If you‘re going to be mucking in with some physical work, or attending a meeting, you know what you should wear. If you’re unsure what you’re going to be doing on your first day, just ring and ask the week before.
  • Have a closing line. If you enjoyed working there and would like to come back, then be ready to ask. Looking for a job? Let them know you’re keen and ask who to address a covering letter to. Also, ask if they would be prepared to write you a reference if needed.

Feedback

As the new kid on the block, we’re just finding our feet. Get Into Theatre would love to receive feedback about what we’re doing and how we could do it better.
