Kelly Morgan got creative at Contact

Kelly Morgan

Name Kelly Morgan

Age 18

Where do you live? Manchester

Where did you do your work placement?
Contact theatre, Manchester

How was it organised?
At high school we had a choice to either set up our own work experience or choose from the school’s list. I was already involved with Contact through the Contact Young Actors’ Company so I wrote a letter and was accepted for work experience.

Why did you decide to go on work experience?
I enjoyed the Contact theatre’s all-around vibe (the people, the projects, the actual theatre), and I wanted to be a performer so thought it would be good to be in a performance environment and see behind the scenes.

How did you get there?
By bus

How long did it last?
Two weeks

How old were you when you did your work experience?
15

What did you do on your work placement?
I was based in the creative development department and helped design flyers for upcoming projects. Sometimes I did later shifts, such as 2pm to 10pm, to help organise a project running that evening. I did a lot of databasing, phone calls and general project management stuff.

What were the most important things you learned?
I learned how to database, as basic as it seems I didn’t know how to do it and it’s a skill I still find useful. I gained a confidence in speaking to people on a professional level, particularly on the phone. I now organise projects and still refer back to skills I learned, and think about how the people I worked with would handle certain situations.

What was the best thing about the experience?
I had fun, it was a relaxed place but work still got done

What would you do differently if you were able to do the same placement again?
Maybe document more evidence, but to be honest I don’t think I would do anything differently
