I am in year 10 and have recently done work experience at the Sheringham Little Theatre. I thoroughly enjoyed my two week placement and took part in a wide range of activities from quite dull admin work to helping set up the stage, selling programmes and buying or borrowing props from local shops. I also got the chance to watch dress rehearsals and first night performances.

Since my placement finished I have been volunteering at the theatre and am hoping to be spending alot more time there. Other people who have had work experience there in the past now work there as paid employees.

My school encouraged us to find our own work placements rather than just rely on them giving us one. I emailed a few theatres but many said that I had to be 16 to work there. I emailed Sheringham Little Theatre and at first but they did not reply, so I sent a further letter, and was then given an interview shortly after.

I didn’t really go into my work placement with any expectations of what it would be like. Part of the reason for me going there was so I could find out what each job entailed, then I could then decide what I was aiming for. Unfortunately I am still not sure which career path I wish to follow, I just know that I’d love to work in a theatre!

I think my ideal job would be something backstage – I’m not so interested in acting. Probably being a director would be the best job.

I plan to carry on volunteering at Sheringham and perhaps that will open some doors for me. If not. I will probably volunteer or work at other theatres during my A-levels and then hopefully I will go on to university where I will probably study something theatre-orientated. I am really hoping something will crop up for me as I work around theatres or study drama at school and university.
