Assistant buyer (trainee)

Responsible to:

Head Costume Buyer

Purpose of Job

This is a position that will be offered annually to a recent graduate in costume or related subject as an opportunity to continue their learning through development of their skills as well as increasing their knowledge and experience.

The post is to assist the Head Buyer with the purchase raw materials and finished goods in respect of costumes for all productions, using a wide range of sources and suppliers, retail and wholesale. Also, to assist the Stock Co-ordinator with the provision of footwear for all productions

Duties and Responsibilities:

* to assist the head buyer and stock co-ordinator, having regular communication and updates. This includes shopping for raw materials, finished goods, accessories, shoes etc. This will often require carrying heavy articles as well as traveling considerable distances. * to assist with sourcing and research into goods and fabrics and maintaining the departments sample database
  • to assist the stock co-ordinator with all footwear provision and maintenance for show
  • to be responsible for petty cash, purchase orders and receipts, keeping accurate records of all spending
  • to maintain, along with the head buyer and stock co-ordinator, all stock rooms and cupboards in a clean and tidy condition and ensure that security, safety and good housekeeping procedures are properly carried out
  • to help co-ordinate the return of all stock items at the end of each show
  • as guided by the costume supervisor or designer, to visit costume hire companies and select costumes as appropriate
  • to assist supervisors during rehearsals and fittings as necessary
  • to arrange delivery of goods either by cab/courier or post etc
  • to assist with the annual stock take as required
  • to participate in training as necessary and appropriate
  • to support our communications objectives by sharing information with your manager and colleagues as appropriate, whilst respecting confidentiality, so that you and your colleagues have all the information you need to perform your duties effectively
  • to undertake any other duties which may reasonably be required

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The postholder must have the following:

  • graduate or recent graduate in costume or related subject
  • good knowledge of textiles
  • good overall costume history knowledge as well as contemporary trends
  • basic knowledge of main shopping areas, or ability to learn
  • basic sewing skills
  • the ability to assess priorities accurately under pressure
  • the ability to work alongside and communicate well with a wide variety of people, both internally and outside the building
    to be accurate, neat and organised with good IT skills (Word and Excel)
  • self-motivation to acquire new skills and knowledge with a helpful, positive, pro-active and flexile approach to the job
