Technical manager/director

Chief technician

Reports to:
Technical Manager

Overall purpose:

  • to work within the technical team giving full provision and facilitation of the technical requirements for the in-house productions, projects and visiting companies

Duties:
All duties to be performed within financial, time and staffing parameters
and constraints agreed with the Technical Manager and freelance Production Manager.

  • co-ordination and supervision of all electrical and technical equipment
    and systems, installation, maintenance and operation
  • preparation of all required technical plans, elevations and associated
    paperwork for both premises and all production purposes
  • liaison with visiting companies on specific technical requirements
  • responsible for the maintenance, good working order and Health &
    Safety conformity, of all electrical and technical equipment and systems, including all chandlery and lifting equipment, in the main house and studio
  • responsible for the maintenance, upkeep and good working order of
    the studio space as a whole, including all technical equipment and
    plant machinery; his includes the heating, ventilation and security
    systems
  • to oversee the PAT Testing programme of all technical and domestic
    areas of both premises
  • the compilation and maintenance of a building services manual,
    covering all premises
  • responsible for IT within the technical department, liaising with the
    Financial and IT Manager, “frontline” responsibility for IT of the technical office
  • the operation of any sound and lighting boards where required
  • overall responsibility for the housekeeping of the fly floor and all
    electrical areas
  • any other duties required within any technical area, namely sound,
    lighting and stage
  • to undertake Duty Technician responsibilities when required
  • to deputise for the Technical Manager where required

All duties will be performed working within current Health & Safety
requirements and employing good, safe, working methods and practices.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Skills:

  • a minimum of three years’ professional theatre experience, including time in a receiving house
  • proven management skills
  • lighting design knowledge, including plan ‘translation’
  • practical experience of PAT testing as well as maintenance programmes of lighting, sound and communications equipment and systems
  • experience of rigging and patching (hard and soft) of lighting systems
  • experience of plotting on computerised lighting boards (preferably Strand 500 Series)
  • experience of rigging and patching (both hard and soft) of sound systems
  • experience of both digital and analogue sound boards plotting and
    operation

Desirable Skills:

  • experience in a producing house and/or musical theatre production
  • knowledge of scrollers and moving lights, both plotting and operation
  • knowledge of digital sound technologies and sound computer software
  • broad based knowledge and practice of other technical areas
  • knowledge of maintaining buildings and premises
  • knowledge of electrical theory and/or city & Guilds 2360
  • education in technical theatre to degree level
  • knowledge and ability to use CAD software
