Stage manager (touring young people's theatre company)
The company has four permanent members of staff:
Artistic Director
General Manager
Tour & Development Manager
Company Administrator
They make up the management team of the Company. The acting and production team for Doors are all on short-term ITC / Equity contracts.
Doors has a touring team of four Actors, one Stage Manager and possibly an access worker.
Stage Managers will have two main areas of responsibility: Rehearsal and Touring
Rehearsal
During rehearsal the Stage Manager will work closely with the Artistic Director, Production Manager and the production team. During the rehearsal period the Stage Manger is responsible to the Production Manager.
- to work alongside the Director and Designer on the play in rehearsal
- to work with the Director and actors on training sessions for Youth workers and projects or workshops, where relevant
- to assist and support the Designer(s), building, making props and organising
- costume buying
- to work with the Composer and Lighting Designer to provide technical support during rehearsals (lights and sound)
- to manage the production float in liaison with the General Manager
- to take responsibility for the production book during rehearsal
- to oversee the preparation of the rehearsal space
Touring
Whilst on tour the Stage Manager is responsible for managing the touring team and ensuring the tour is carried out in a professional manner. Whilst on tour the Stage Manager is responsible to the Tour and Development Manager.
- to co-ordinate and manage get-ins and get-outs, working with the touring team and technical staff at theatre venues
- to drive the company mercedes van (or hire vehicle if necessary); the Stage Manager will be the primary driver of the van and will be responsible for ensuring that it is in sound mechanical condition, calling on professional help as needed and keeping the van records file up to date
- to set up technical equipment and organise re-light at each gig and to operate lights, sound and video for the show; to ensure that technical equipment is in good working order and informing the office if any problems develop
- to keep petty cash records, in line with company policy; meeting with the Tour Manager/ General Manager on a regular basis, as appropriate
- to be responsible for the care of the set and costumes
- to carry out general liaison for the company and represent the company for the duration of the tour; working with and supporting the touring team in the event of any crisis or difficulty
- to keep in regular contact with tour manager and all the venues on tour, to ensure that all technical information is available to both
- to Co-ordinate accommodation for the tour, this does not involve booking accommodation, but paying the bills, keeping receipts, sorting out any problems and liaise with the Tour Manager and General Manager at the office as necessary
- to ensure the touring team adhere to the call sheets on the road and to change them if necessary; to be responsible for completing time sheets on a weekly basis
- the stage manager is responsible for ensuring that the company maintains good communication whilst touring and takes responsibility by informing the office if any difficulties arise
- to ensure the set, costumes and props are returned at the end of the tour; these are to be returned to company base or from where they are hired or borrowed
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- full clean driving licence
- over one year’s driving experience
- aged over 25 years
- excellent time management skills
- ability to work within a team
- experience of handling petty cash and budgets
- ability to remian calm under pressure
- excellent coomunication/ interpersonal skills
- experience of touring YPT or small scale theatre
- an enthusiasm for, or expereince of, working with young people
- experience of working with technical equipment (particularly lights and sound)
- excellent organisational skills
