Deputy head of scenic art

Department:

Head of Scenic Art

Job Purpose:

  • to paint/ decorate scenery and to work on props and furniture and produce other scenic items for productions

Key Task Areas:

  • to paint/ decorate scenery props furniture and other stage effects as required
  • to assist Head of Scenic Art in finding the most effective way of realising the design of each production
  • to assist the Head of Scenic Art in producing a cost estimate for every production
  • to advise the Head of Scenic Art of developing technical or timescale problems at the earliest opportunity
  • to attend read-throughs, production meetings, and other meetings when required
  • in consultation with the Head of Scenic Art and Production Manager to order materials for productions
  • to assist in maintaining stock levels of basic materials and equipment
  • to ensure that his/her time is used as cost-effectively as possible
  • to ensure that all their work is completed to the Designer’s satisfaction prior to fit-up
  • to be available for paint calls as required after the fit-up
  • to drive the theatre’s vehicle/s when required
  • promote and adhere to the organisation’s culture and values
  • to be aware of, adhere to, and implement any legislative requirements consistent with overall duties of this post, with particular regard to Health and Safety policies and procedures, Data Protection Act 1998 and equal opportunities
  • to undergo relevant training and development required by the Head of Scenic Art
  • to carry out any other tasks that will, from time to time be allocated by the Head of Scenic Art or Production Manager on an ad hoc or continuing basis, commensurate with the general level of responsibility of the post

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

Experience:

  • proven interest in scenic art, and/or painting or murals
  • competence in a range of painting styles and techniques·
  • proven competence in a producing theatre
  • proven competence in the safe use of relevant equipment.

Knowledge/ Qualifications:

  • theatre design/ scenic decoration
  • understanding of, and commitment to, live performance
  • understanding of Health & Safety

Skills/ Abilities:

  • to be able to paint scenery
