Creative producer (community theatre project)

The project for which the Creative Producer post is being created is a collaboration between the council and the theatre, with the work being led by the theatre. It will broaden the Theatre’s community engagement work considerably, and will begin to address the issue of how the Theatre can reach culturally diverse communities. It is being supported by a Grants for the Arts Award and the post of Creative Producer is offered for a fixed-term period of 18 months.

The project will lead to the devising of a large-scale community performance.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

1.Project Management:

* develop a creative vision and outline structure for the project * set detailed objectives, measures of success and monitoring processes * ensure that the project is developed in close liaison with colleagues at the theatre and the council, and with key community contacts * ensure appropriate contractual arrangements with all those involved in the project, as well as CRB checks and other administrative procedures as appropriate * with the support of the Head of Learning and Participation, ensure correct and safe working practices by everyone working on the project, ensuring the welfare of all artists and participants in line with our Health and Safety Policy * take responsibility for the management of the project budget in liaison with the Head of Finance, ensuring that all activity is delivered within agreed budgets * work closely with marketing colleagues on the production of all promotional material

2.Creative Development:

* develop an overall creative vision for the project * identify participating artists, including a director for the culminating production, in discussion with the Head of Learning and Participation and the Artistic Director * identify participating community groups and individuals * support the development of the creative content of the project as it progresses, in collaboration with participating artists and communities * brief and support participating artists throughout the project * support and co-ordinate the involvement of participating community groups * work closely with participating artists and theatre colleagues to produce the culminating performance, and to produce any smaller-scale performances or exhibitions that may take place at earlier stages of the project

3.Legacy:

* lead a formative and summative evaluation process, and write a report making recommendations for the future * create a DVD which records the process from start to finish * work with theatre staff to ensure the project’s legacy within the organisation’s ongoing community engagement programme

4.General:

* ensure that our policies and corporate styles are observed throughout all activities related to the project * ensure that appropriate credits of all partners and supporters are included in all documentation and promotional material

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential skills

  • proven skills in co-ordinating and delivering performing arts projects in community contexts
  • an understanding of the needs of a professional theatre in staging community productions
  • proven skills in working with community groups and individuals from different cultural backgrounds
  • proven skills in working with artists from a range of artform backgrounds
  • a commitment to collaborative working with stakeholders and community partners, and an understanding of the needs of successful partnership working
  • ability to co-ordinate, develop and deliver a varied programme of activities which maximize sustainable community development and ensure opportunities for participation from the community
  • understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities , valuing diversity and the principles of social inclusion
  • excellent IT skills
  • ability to work to a budget
  • ability to prioritise and work to strict deadlines
  • excellent communication skills, both written and spoken
  • a genuine interest and passion for the role of the arts in the community
