Careers in theatre

Producer

The ITC, an industry body that represents over 600 members, says:

This role has overall responsibility for selecting, financing and controlling the development, casting, rehearsals and performances of productions.

We would add that the producer is in overall charge of the production and takes responsibility for making critical decisions and controlling the production budget. Essentially the role of a theatre producer is to create or develop theatre projects. Since the producer is the person who pays for the project and is at risk if it fails, he/she has to be extremely motivated. A good producer should inspire confidence in the team at work and have sufficient self belief to ride through the rough seas of commercial ups and downs.

So, You Wanna’ Be A Producer?! is a guide produced by Stage One, Theatrical Management Association and the Society of London Theatre and is available for download via Stage One website (or costs £50 if you have money to burn and really must have a hard copy).

Stage One also runs an intensive three-day workshop for new producers annually.

Bursaries and awards available for new producers include the Rupert Rhymes Bursary, Stage One’s bursaries for new producers and Stage One’s producer training internship
