Marketing officer (trainee)

Responsible to:

Marketing & Sales Manager

Responsible for:

Box Office Team, Distribution Officer and Neighbourhood Representatives on project work or in the absence of the Marketing Manager

Purpose of the Job:

  • to build an awareness and a profile of the theatre as a venue and high quality arts resource
  • to forge effective relationships with local, regional and national press, the media, funders and arts organisations, education providers, customers, staff and volunteers, the general public, commercial partners and sponsors

Main Activities:

  • to develop and manage strong relationships with the press and media, in particular fostering relationships with the local press
  • to contribute to the development of the profile of the theatre as a high quality arts resource enabling the local community to access arts provision of regional, national and international significance
  • to assist the Marketing Manager with the organisation’s advertising
  • to manage listing and editorial coverage in local, regional and national press
  • to support the theatre’s web-based marketing including the maintenance of the website and links with other sites including the borough’s site, e-mail information systems and interactive booking
  • to ensure that all existing and potential funders and stakeholders have an awareness of the theatre’s activities, its aims and objectives
  • to co-ordinate all PR events, launches, interviews, photo calls and press nights both on and off-site
  • to prepare media stratagem, supervised by the Marketing Manager for each season
  • to prepare and submit regular press releases
  • to ensure that all staff, the board and other stakeholders are aware of the extent of press coverage through regular updates and by keeping an updated archive of all published material; to ensure that all staff, the board and other stakeholders are aware of the extent of press coverage through regular updates and reports and by keeping an updated archive of all media coverage
  • to assist in the documentation of activities through photography, video, the internet, CD-Rom and other media
  • to assist the development of community networks through regular communication and meetings (both on and off-site) to local groups, artists, participants and network organizations
  • to develop and manage an effective publicity distribution system for all print
  • to manage publicity displays both on-site and in associated sites (for example libraries, social centres, leisure centres and other venues, the Civic Centre, Town Hall, parks, shopping centres and other public centres)

General:

  • to deputise for the Marketing Manager in his or her absence
  • to undertake occasional, ad-hoc work in the box office when required to cover staff breaks
  • to comply with and uphold the theatre’s general principles, expected levels of customer care and HR procedures

This list of duties is not designed to be exhaustive and the staff is expected to be adaptive and flexible to the changing nature of the organization. The Press & Marketing Officer will be required to attend performances out of normal office hours (10am until 6pm).

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications:

  • A-Level or equivalent - Essential
  • IT Training – Desirable
  • Marketing qualification – Desirable

Experience:

  • experience in public relations – Essential
  • at least one year’s experience in a marketing role – Desirable
  • experience in dealing with the press – Desirable
  • experience in distribution systems – Desirable

Professional Knowledge:

  • knowledge of database systems -Essential
  • good & accurate writing skills and copywriting ability – Essential
  • knowledge and appreciation of theatre, music and live entertainment – Essential
  • understanding of good customer care – Essential
  • highly conversant in IT , specifically Microsoft Office – Essential
  • knowledge of box office procedures – Desirable
  • working knowledge of any of the following software packages: Patron Edge ticketing system, Vital Statistics, Adobe Photoshop & Artifax Event – Desirable
