Job description

Technical assistant

The Technical Assistant is responsible to the Stage Manager and will work closely with him/her to support the effective operation of the technical aspects of The Theatre’s activities.

The primary responsibilities can be summarised as follows:

  • as required by the Stage Manager, be present as the theatre’s representative at performances of visiting shows, and as appropriate, to stage manage or operate LX and/or sound for such show
  • prepare for, and to work visiting company get ins/get outs and to assist companies in rigging and focusing LX and/or sound equipment
  • as required by the Stage Manager, liaise with the technical staff of visiting companies regarding technical requirements and discuss their needs and possible contras (additional staffing, equipment etc)
  • liaise with the Community & Education Officer, Youth Theatre Director and voluntary arts groups regarding the technical requirements for their activities, to oversee the effective implementation of such and to be the main point of contact for these areas of work
  • provide information about the theatre’s technical facilities to visiting companies
  • support the Stage Manager in the maintenance and safety of all backstage machinery, technical areas and dressing rooms
  • join the production and stage management team for the theatre’s in-house productions, including the annual pantomime, in the capacity required by the Stage Manager
  • control all stocks of necessary equipment within the technical department and arrange the hire of any equipment as required
  • support the FOH Supervisor in the weekly testing of all system equipment
  • as required by the General Manager or FOH Supervisor, to oversee the work of external contractors
  • in liaison with the General Manager, to ensure that the heating and ventilating systems to all areas are operating in a satisfactory fashion
  • to attend in-house training sessions and external courses or training initiatives relevant to the post
  • to deputise for the projectionist either in-house or for Movies on the Move act as a keyholder for the building, including emergency call out
  • any other duties that may be requested from time to time

Personal characteristics

Essential:

  • good health and fitness
  • good hearing
  • good eyesight and colour vision, with the assistance of glasses if necessary
  • ability to work safely at heights

Desirable:

  • good telephone manner

Qualifications

Essential:

  • at least four GCEs/GCSEs, two of which must be English and Mathematics

Desirable:

  • successfully completed training course in technical theatre, covering electrics and carpentry, and involving work experience placements
  • current driving licence
  • first aid certificate
  • CRB checked

Special skills

Essential:

  • basic electrics
  • basic carpentry
  • numerate
  • IT literate
  • ability to read and interpret + LX + plans
  • ability to operate LX boards
  • ability to mix theatre sound

Desirable:

  • ability to read music

Work experience and achievements

Essential:

  • experience of working in an arts environment
  • work experience in technical theatre
