General manager (repertory theatre) A

Overall purpose of job:

  • to have overall responsibility for the smooth running of all operational
    services
  • to be the key contact for the theatre as a building resource
  • to support the production department and management board in the scheduling and resourcing of productions

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Production:
Line Management: Production Company Manager/ Technical Manager

  • to outline the schedule of performances and advise the management board on suitable dates for shows
  • to set production budgets with the expenditure control group
  • to have an overview of all productions and support on the most effective means of getting the show to stage and running
  • to oversee H&S backstage and on stage – and ensure proper risk assessments, supervision and records are kept
  • to negotiate and book venues for touring productions
  • to negotiate (fixed term and services) contracts with freelance creative team and artists
  • to be key contact for any budgetary or major practical problems in developing productions
  • to be the key contact for any visiting productions
  • to support the access group in provision of access performances (audio described, captioned, signed, etc)
  • to obtain all royalties for adaptations of works under copyright, and ensure the company adheres to any conditions of copyright
  • to be part of management team for special one off events – filming,
    galas, etc

Building
Line Management: Building Supervisor/ FOH & Volunteer Coordinator/ Personnel Manager/ Bar manager/ Catering department/ Office Manager

  • to be designated premises supervisor and a named licensee for licence to sell alcohol
  • to ensure compliance with premises licence conditions, incl. liaison with council’s Building Control & Environmental Health depts. and the Fire Service
  • to oversee security, Health & Safety and fire safety – developing policies & procedures that protect the company at every level
  • to chair the H&S committee and ensure that all safety concerns are identified and resolved in the minimum amount of time
  • to oversee the company’s maintenance contracts – liaising with the main contractor and maintenance management company
  • to ensure that all equipment is inspected, maintained and serviced in line with legislation and good practise
  • to manage small building development projects
  • to act as Secretariat to our property company, to attend meetings and provide advice and information where appropriate
  • to attend building care group and produce an snnual works schedule following the group’s advice
  • to have overall responsibility for insurance cover and to be the main point of contact for insurance issues
  • to have overall control for certain expenditure budgets – i.e. building, admin, bar and catering budgets
  • to be a financial signatory – for cheques, BACs payments and the payroll
  • to chair and lead the environmental group – developing environmental policies and procedures
  • to support and guide the Personnel Manager in regard to compliance with legislation and best practice in personnel & reviewing the staff handbook
  • to support and guide the Bar Manager and Cook in regard to the provision and development of the bar and catering facilities – to provide the most appropriate facilities for a variety of events and shows

General

  • to be part of Management Board, the company’s general decision-making body
  • to sit on such working groups that the Management Board may elect
  • to act as Secretariat for the Management Board

Performance Indicators

  • the company has a clear performance schedule, disseminated to all staff
  • production budgets are set and well managed
  • provides key contact for senior managers seeking advice
  • contributes positively to Management Board meetings and provides useful administrative support
  • all directly line-managed staff feel supported and enabled in their work
  • productions and events run as smoothly and successfully as possible
  • all suitable H&S measures are in place and monitored
  • touring productions are supported
  • contracts with venues and fixed term staff are well set up and managed
  • rights and licences are obtained where necessary
  • we comply with a legislation and regulations in terms of H&S, licensing,
    equipment, personnel, etc
  • we receive best possible service and value from all maintenance
    contractors
  • we have appropriate insurance cover at all times
  • finance department is supported through the authorisation of payments
  • a high level of best possible practice is maintained in all areas of work

PERSONAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

Experience:

  • considerable experience of managing a producing theatre and managing a range of senior staff in production and FOH areas
  • experience and knowledge of how to comply with pblic etertainment
    lience and acohol
  • licensing conditions & inspections
  • lo have undertaken H&S training to senior level – preferably with accreditation
  • knowledge of H&S legislation – ability to advise and run staff H&S briefings
  • knowledge of tendering & contract processes – particularly in relation to insurance and maintenance
  • experience of managing small building development projects
  • experience of drawing up and overseeing production budgets
  • excellent administration and IT skills
  • excellent communication and staff management skills
  • experience of keeping a company schedule & informing all staff of changes
  • experience of liaison with Trustees and provision of admin support to
    meetings
  • to have been a company signatory – for financial or legislative purposes
  • ability to work inclusively and help develop an inclusive environment

Desirable:

  • to have acted as the designated premises supervisor for a public building
  • to be a personal licence holder – and have acted as licensee for alcohol sales
  • to hold IOSHH H&S certification – to management level
  • knowledge of the provision of catering for a variety of events and functions
  • experience of coordinating large events
  • to hold valid first aid at work certificate
  • knowledge of access provision in shows (captioning, audio describing, signing)
  • knowledge of food hygiene regulations
