General manager (receiving theatre)
Reporting to:
Executive Director

Main Purpose of the Post:
- to take lead responsibility for theatre personnel management and systems
- to play a key role in the general administrative management of the theatre
This new role sits at the heart of the organisation, working closely with the Executive Director at an exciting stage in the Theatre’s development.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES
Personnel:
- primary point of contact for all personnel matters within theatre staff team
- maintenance and development of the theatre’s HR systems and policies and consistent application of same
- full responsibility for the theatre’s recruitment and review processes, as well as any grievance or disciplinary procedures
- collation of the annual training plan and management of the training budget
- appropriate data gathering for equal opportunities monitoring and other comparative analysis as required
- liaison with the finance department to ensure accurate payroll and associated calculations
- communication with staff representatives and the engendering of positive staff relations
- co-ordinating and ensuring the effectiveness of staff meetings
Funding and Financial:
- in collaboration with the finance team and project managers/ producers, ensuring solid budgeting, financial management and monitoring of project activity, initially particularly in relation to youth arts & education projects; also overseeing the producing of returns and/ or other communication with project funders or other stakeholders as appropriate
- support to the Associate Producer in respect of budgeting hires, one-off presentations and other events, in collaboration with the finance team
- collation of information required by the company’s core funding bodies in line with the conditions attached to these grants and the drafting of funding returns, including the development and maintenance of systems for capturing statistical information
- assisting the Executive Director in financial management and budgeting
Legal: - supporting the Executive Director, Associate Producer and Head of Youth Arts & Education with the issuing of contracts to artists, creative teams, technical and other project personnel
- liaison with the theatre’s insurers, maintaining inventories and other records and ensuring that the company’s insurance policies and levels of cover are appropriate and up-to-date
- in conjunction with the Theatre Manager, Resources and Technical Manager and Production Manager, ensuring that the theatre and any other premises that the company users are complying with Health & Safety and licensing requirements and that all relevant documentation is in place
- keeping company secretarial records up-to-date in respect of the theatre companies and ensuring timely returns to Companies House and the Charities Commission
- support across the organisation in respect of contractual negotiations and agreements
Other: - assisting, and where appropriate deputising for, the Executive Director in the overall sound management of the Company and all its associated activities
- other tasks as required, commensurate with the overall purpose of the post
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential:
- experience of personnel management
- up-to-date knowledge of employment legislation and best practice
- experience of negotiating and issuing contracts
- experience of managing significant project budgets
- evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills
- proven strong administrative skills and attention to detail
- ability to juggle multiple priorities effectively

Desirable:
- experience in dealing with all aspects of recruitment administration and processes
- experience in delivering training to staff
- Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualification
- experience of Health & Safety in a theatre environment

- experience in a producing theatre environment
As a new position, it is anticipated that the role will develop over time, and a review of this job description will take place after the first six months.
