Careers in theatre

Education officer/ manager/ director

The ITC, an industry body that represents over 600 members, says:

This team plans and operates education activities related to the theatre’s productions and theatre and drama generally. Outreach is the work that goes out of the theatre into the community, schools and to other organisations. These can take the form of plays, drama workshops and classes, and training for teachers such as INSET days.

We would add that most theatres and many touring theatre companies have a person who is in charge of education and learning, although they may be called head of education or education officer. They are responsible for managing workshops in schools and at the theatre, sometimes overseeing youth theatres, offering training courses for teachers and actors, and leading community engagement projects.

NB Also called the outreach, community, learning or creative learning department
