Head of fundraising (theatre-based)

Main Purposes of the Job:

  • to be responsible for the development, implementation, review and management of the fundraising strategy of the company to ensure that fundraising targets set by the Director of Business Development and as set out in the budget and business plan are met

Key Responsibilities:

  • to work towards hitting the target set out in the business plan and budget for fundraising activities per annum
  • to manage the productivity of a team of three Development Managers and one Database Manager (‘the Team’)
  • to liaise with those responsible for marketing to ensure both sections of the Development Team are functioning efficiently and in a joined-up way
  • with those responsible for marketing, to report to the Director of Business Development once a week on management issues and income generation
  • to work closely with the Director of Business Development, feeding into the strategy development of the company and particularly around procuring and developing income from the company’s principal sources: trusts & foundations, corporate giving, individual giving, events
  • to have the main responsibility for checking all applications made by the team to trusts & foundations and corporates
  • to devise and manage two campaigns per annum to raise profile and funds
  • to develop a legacy and in memoriam programme
  • to ensure that supporters are recognised and acknowledged in ways that is appropriate to their level of giving and develop and/ or maintain their support
  • to liaise with the Director of Education and Outreach and his team to ensure that potential funders are appropriately nurtured
  • to network with other fundraising professionals to ensure the company is a model of best practice within the industry.
  • to attend internal and external management and planning meetings to inform and be informed as required
  • to adhere to all financial recording procedures set up within the department and laid out in the company’s financial manual
  • to carry out all responsibilities within our philosophy & equal opportunities
  • to carry out any other duties that may reasonably fall within the remit of the post

Performance Indicators:
Compliance with and competence at any of the duties/responsibilities listed above; in particular but not restricted to:

  • funding and business development targets for allocated projects are met
  • weekly progress reports are provided to the Director of Business Development
  • team is managed cohesively and fairly and has positive and effective communication with all other departments and with funders
  • team feel supported, motivated and enthusiastic in their work
  • enthusiasm for our work and positive attitude
  • you are seen as the key contact for fundraising from trusts & foundations, corporate giving, individual giving and events
  • applications going out from team are accurate and presented in a way that maximises their likelihood of success
  • excellent relations maintained with all funders
  • accurate Raiser’s Edge and database records are maintained and updated
  • our inclusive policy and procedures adhered to
  • has made positive contribution to the business development of the theatre, its productions, its work and its other products and services

Personal Skills and Attributes:

* Substantial success and experience of raising funds to targets from these sources: *# trusts and foundations *# individuals (including individual giving schemes, legacies etc) *# corporates *# events/ major campaigns
  • excellent staff management skills and ability to maximise staff effectiveness
  • skills in relationship management and promotion (talks, conferences etc)
  • experience of using a range of marketing and communications support (e.g. printed materials, use and development of branded materials, etc)
  • strong team player
  • good written and oral communication skills
  • IT skills and experience:
  • Word and Excel (essential)
  • Raisers Edge (preferable)
  • Active interest in inclusive theatre preferable
  • commitment to working in ways that reflect our values
