Job description

Development officer (theatre-based)

Reporting to:
Development Manager

Responsible for:
Patrons and individual giving, development events, development administration

Duties to the theatre:

  • to work in support of the artistic policy of the theatre
  • to attend read-throughs, rehearsals (as required), previews and press nights
  • to attend a weekly company meeting and act always in the best interest of the theatre

Patrons:

  • stewardship of and building relationships with Patrons at all levels (£100-£10,000)
  • administrate patron membership renewals and payments
  • research potential patrons and devise strategy for recruiting them
  • review patron membership scheme to identify areas for improvement and implement improvements

Other areas of individual giving:

  • in conjunction with the Development Manager, develop a strategy for seeking further support from individuals and implement that strategy

Development events:

  • run and attend events for patrons on a regular basis
  • manage other development events (with assistance from a freelance Events Co-ordinator on the income generating events)

Development administration

  • recording development income & expenditure, filing, mailings, newsletters, updating donor lists for programmes and the website, benefit fulfilment, answering general emails and telephone inquiries, development box office requests

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • at least two years’ experience in a fundraising department of an arts organisation
  • actively enthusiastic about theatre and new writing in particular
  • experience of managing an individual giving scheme
  • experience of writing to and dealing directly with supporters
  • experience of managing events
  • excellent knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets
  • excellent computing skills and numerate
  • experience of a fundraising database

Desirable

  • experience of a Box Office system and Microsoft Outlook email system, or similar
  • experience of prospect research

  • well organised, presentable and confident
  • a creative problem solver who enjoys using their own initiative
  • hardworking, enthusiastic and motivated. Able to manage alone and be a team player
