Costume maker (trainee)

Purpose of Job
The theatre is offering a one year bursary position of Trainee Ladies Costume Maker. Under the direction of the Head Cutter and her team, the trainee will continue to build upon skills already learned on an appropriate recognised costume course, will learn new skills and will be part of a team working in a theatre environment. S/he will share all aspects of the work from making and seeing costumes fitted through to technical and dress rehearsals. No permanent employment can be guaranteed at the end of the bursary period, but it is anticipated that the trainee will be able to go forward independently into the industry with enhanced skills and experience. This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate looking to continue their learning and start a career in costume.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* construct costumes and accessories as required under the tuition and guidance of the Head Cutter or a member of the team * realise costume requirements using a wide variety of techniques, materials and finishes as appropriate * attend fittings with a senior member of the department * work to agreed deadlines, consulting at all times and informing your manager of any problems at the earliest opportunity, always monitoring and ensuring the highest standards of work * udertake specific training objectives as set by the Head Cutter in order to further your techniques and sewing skills. These may or may not be related to the show in hand * atend technical and dress rehearsals as required * mintain high standards of operations and good housekeeping * use equipment correctly and maintain where appropriate * parrticipate in, and promote, an alert and positive approach to Health and Safety * to comply with the National’s Equal Opportunities policy at all timesPERSON SPECIFICATION
The post holder must have the following:
* BA/City & Guilds or equivalent in Costume Making * a desire to pursue a career as a Ladies Costume Maker * self-motivation and ability to acquire and develop new skills through appropriate training * willingness to learn new techniques and abilities and take instruction from senior members of the team * sound knowledge of period costume * good accurate hand and machine sewing skills * familiarity with sewing terminology and range of fabrics * good interpersonal and communication skills * able to work to deadlines * able to lift and move costumes and boxes * able to manoeuvre costume rails and skips * flexibility regarding hours of work, i.e. evenings/weekends/bank holidays if required
