Main Purpose of the Post
To work alongside the Chief Electrician on all technical aspects of the Theatre and its productions, with particular responsibility for sound.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
- to be responsible for amplification, provision of sound effects etc for all productions and performances in the theatre; this may include, on some productions, sound design work
- working with, and when appropriate deputising for, the Chief Electrician on all aspects of the technical operation of productions including lighting and sound fit-ups/ rigging and get ins/outs
- working with Directors and Musical Directors during rehearsal periods and also assisting freelance sound designers where appropriate
- during fit-up periods it is expected that the Deputy Chief Electrician will also be helping the Chief Electrician in the rigging and focusing of lights as well as undertaking other sound duties that they may have on the show
- operating the sound desk for performances
- ensuring that all sound equipment, including the theatre infra-red assisted listening system and associated audio description facilities, are kept maintained and available for all performances
- assisting the Chief Electrician in ensuring the efficient running of building electrical systems
- providing basic technical housekeeping services to the theatre, including maintaining lamps in and outside the building to a high standard
- any other duties that may be reasonably required
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The post would ideally suit someone who has spent at least a year in a similar size venue working on shows in a rep environment – where they have both had sound responsibility and also have undertaken rigging, focusing and plotting of lights as well.
Essential:
- experience of working in a busy producing house
- experience of live mixing, both vocal and music and a good working knowledge of radio microphones
- proven ability to provide sound effects and amplification for a variety of productions
- demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- commitment to achieving high standards within limited resources
- the ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively
- a flexible approach to working, including the ability to work antisocial hours when required
- a commitment to the work of the theatre
Desirable:
- experience of sound design
- experience in electrics/ stage lighting
- up-to-date knowledge and experience of Health and Safety
