Bar manger (theatre-based)

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST
To take responsibility for the bar operation, including the smooth running of our daily programme of free live entertainment.
Working closely with the Theatre Manager you will help ensure that theatre bar provides a high level of customer service to theatre goers and the general public alike – equally that the bar is run efficiently and that its income/ profit potential is maximised.
In addition, you will work with the Theatre Manager and catering franchise operation to ensure consistency and quality across the bar and catering areas.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Bar Management Duties:
- to run the bar in accordance with best practice, and informed by the bar operations manual
- recruitment, training and management of the Bar Supervisors and Assistants team
- rostaing bar staff to maximise efficiency and customer service
- daily cashing up and cash management, including responsibility for cash floats
- liaison with the finance department regarding the banking of cash
- stock management including overseeing receipt of deliveries
- general cellar management including the cleaning of pipes.
- ensuring the bar and theatre Front of House areas are clean, tidy and presentable to the public at all times
- ensuring background music in the bar is appropriate in style and volume
- responsibility for the safety and security of bar staff and patrons
- carrying out of key-holder duties
- to undertake any other work as agreed with the Theatre Manager as appropriate for the position
Live Entertainment Duties:
- responsible for maintaining the atmosphere in the bar, including dimming the lights, closing blinds, and adjusting sound amplification
- ensuring the smooth running of the live bar entertainment
- ensuring that artists are paid according to procedure
- to assist artists with the setting up and removing of their equipment.
- setting up seating and chairs in cabaret style

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION
Essential:
- bar management experience
- strong interpersonal skills
- proven management skills, preferably including a casual workforce
- ability to remain calm under pressure and in dealing with unexpected or emergency situations
- demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- attention to detail
- up-to-date knowledge of electronic till systems
- a flexible approach to work, including the ability to work unsocial hours
- an interest in music, comedy and spoken word
- a commitment to the work of the heatre
Desirable:
- experience of responsibility for Health and Safety in the workplace and in relation to the public
- experience of managing live entertainment
- experience of liaison with or management of a catering operation
- experience in a performing arts or a related environment
- food hygiene training
- first aid training
- personal license holder
