Artistic director (theatre-based) B

Responsible to:

The Chief Executive

Responsible for:

Maintaining and developing the organisation’s artistic policy and programme

The Artistic Director:

• formulates, develops and implements the company’s artistic policy and objectives

• creates and implements programmes of artistic activity and undertakes related planning

• ensures the highest quality standards for productions and other artistic activities

• is a powerful advocate for the theatre

• actively seeks out work appropriate to the space, catering both to a national theatre-going public and to the theatre’s immediate community

• supports incoming companies and develops new generations of theatre practitioners

• works with the Education Director and Associate Education Director to develop audiences

• supports the development of entrepreneurial activity such as touring and co-productions

• shares in office duties, attending weekly meetings, and duty managing at least once a week in the theatre

The Artistic Director and the Chief Executive share the following responsibilities:

• maintain and develop effective management practices and employment policies and practices

• provide the board of management with accurate and timely information to enable appropriate decisions to be made on matters of policy, planning and budgeting

• ensure compliance with all relevant legislation

• identify and develop appropriate fundraising and sponsorship activity in support of the work of the company

• ensure efficient and solvent financial management of the company

Essential skills, qualities, and experience

• the ability to provide artistic and managerial leadership

• excellent communication skills

• a reputation for excellent and innovative work in your field; a proven track record as a creator/ promoter of theatre arts

• experience of programming

• confidence in developing relationships with the wider community (i.e. funding bodies, local council, community groups) and building partnerships with relevant organisations

• demonstrable commitment to theatre in the community/ theatre in education

• experience of managing budgets

• administrative competence

• extensive knowledge of current trends in theatre practice including new writing, work for young audiences,site-specific work, international theatre (and theatre in translation) and non-text based work

• a wide range of productive contacts in the theatre and community sectors both in London and further afield

Desirable skills, qualities and experience

• experience of audience development and marketing

• experienced in capital fundraising

• senior management experience within a producing theatre company or venue
