Theatre production (degree)

WARNING!! Many courses that call themselves theatre production actually focus on stage management and technical disciplines. They could well be very good courses, but they do not deal with the core skills you need to become a theatre producer.

Laura Drane, a freelance arts consultant and former theatre producer said: "In the theatre world the words producing/ producer and production can have radically different meanings. A producer, or someone who is producing a show will make it happen in the broadest possible sense of the word ie fundraising, tour-booking and marketing the show. Where as the production manager is a more technical, stage-based role, more akin to a stage manager. I think that most theatre production courses have an eye towards turning out production managers rather than theatre producers.

“So when courses say they are about production, the majority will teach you about bringing-to-life and managing the technical aspects of the show”.

The only courses we found that are true theatre producer courses are performance production & management at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh and theatre production at London South Bank University.

Theatre production skills are general project management ones.
