Scenic arts, set design and props (foundation)
There’s a whole variety of specialisms when it comes to making the set. Some courses are focussed on set design, whilst others are biased towards scenic art (creating the painted and textural elements of the design) or construction.
Scenic arts/ construction is sometimes combined with props-making, both as a degree courses and as a job.
Sean Crowley, chair of the Association of Theatre Design Courses says:
“Twenty five years ago there were just five courses, turning out a maximum of 100 graduates each year. Now there are over 20 courses and 1,200–1,300 students graduating in a climate which where most of the work is on a freelance basis and very few theatres have resident designers or design departments anymore”.
He adds that most colleges and universities have adapted their courses to provide specialist slants, so choosing the right course for you – rather than the most local one–is critical.
