Puppetry (degree)
The Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London ran the first UK degree in puppet theatre and continues to be one of the leading institutions for the training of puppeteers, attracting national and international students.
The puppetry degree course includes both design and performance. You will develop drawing, design and sculpture, animation, movement, vocal and manipulation skills. You will make puppets in a range of styles. You will also explore the world of object manipulation and develop projects for performance both within and outside the school.
The course at University of Hertfordshire is more about making and less about performing and is called character creation and technical effects. It combines designing and making unusual characters with the creation of soft effects for film and tv. You develop skills in sculpting, moulding and casting and the application of finishes such as fabric and fur, foam latex and paint. You will learn to apply a variety of hair, wigs, make-up and prosthetics, create special costumes and soft props, and make a range of body padding, extensions and frameworks for larger than life characters.
The theatre and performance degree at Plymouth is a good option if you want to perform with , but not to make puppets. It is not strictly a puppetry course but has been included as it features puppetry as a main option. Modules on the courses include improvisation, popular and political performance, movement theatre, mask and puppetry, experimental theatre, acting and directing and non-Western approaches to performance
