Louie Whitemore, 23, left her Lake District home to study technical theatre at the Royal Scottish Academy. A postgrad theatre design course at Motley helped her to realise her dream.

Originally I am from Watermillock in the Lake District. I now live in London.

What do you do?
Freelance designer. I also work in stage management.

How long have you been at it?
Two years

What was your very first role in theatre?
Assistant stage manager (ASM)

What have you done in theatre?
In the last year jobs have included:
* Designer, Mud by Maria Irene Fornes, The Gate Theatre, London
* Revival Designer I Capuleitti E Montecchi by Bellini, Grange Park Opera, Winchester (original designer was Robert Innes Hopkins)
* Stage manager The Nutcracker, Alice In Wonderland and Giselle, with English National Ballet
* Company stage manager The Barber of Seville, by Rossini, Grange Park / Pimlico Opera

Have you got qualifications?
* Degree in technical and production arts from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama
* Motley theatre design course

What did you want to be when you grew up?
Not sure what I wanted to do when I was very young, but I wanted to work in theatre from the age of 12

What do you do all day?
As a freelancer there is never a typical day. However they tend to include a lot of travelling around, talking and collaborating with many people and long hours!

What’s the best thing about your job?
Its variety and the people

And the worst?
The unpredictability of the amount of work

What’s your dream job in theatre?
I would love to design for the National Theatre and do a large scale opera for a major opera house

Got any wise words for someone who wants to be where you are now?
Be nice to everyone you meet and just keep plugging away. It seems to have worked so far!*
