What was your very first role in theatre?
Freelance drama worker

What else have you done in theatre?
I’ve worked as duty manager at Northern Stage, as a breakdance instructor in schools, as youth theatre leader for Monster Productions, a drama teacher for Stagecoach, an actor/ facilitator with Gibber Theatre Company and Open Clasp Theatre Company, and delivered drama projects in schools with Bigfoot Theatre. I’ve worked at Live Theatre now since May 06.

Have you got qualifications?
A-levels and a drama degree from University of Northumbria

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A ski instructor or an anthropologist

What do you do all day?
Overseeing a youth theatre of 200 participants, planning and delivering workshops, directing shows, employing freelancers, being involved in creative meetings, planning and delivering community drama projects, working with fundraiser on funding applications.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Directing shows and working with young people

And the worst?
Funding applications

What’s your dream job in theatre?
Artistic director

Got any wise words for someone who wants to be where you are now?
Join a youth theatre (see NAYT), get involved in as many projects as possible, get as much experience as possible even if it’s voluntary, look at courses that focus on community theatre not just a broad drama course. Get a CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau–essential check if you want to work with children).
